Steady hands held the blender in place, making sure the mix of coffee beans, milk, half and half as well as some other ingredients did not spill. Her cautious eyes watched with a slight degree of exhaustion as she poured the mocha frappachino into the correct cup size and then popped the top on before she put it on the counter. “Mocha Frap.” Valentine grunted, watching a as middle-aged man took his drink, the same exhausted look on his face. By now, the sun was setting, it’s light being replaced with the street lights that surrounded the small Starbucks. It had been a very long day, and Valentine was just ready for her drudgingly long shift to be over, but she still had a few more hours to go. ‘Fuck my life..’ she thought as she moved--zombie like--to the register.
“Hello, welcome to Starbucks. How may I serve you today?” she asked, trying to make her voice as perky as possible, but only sounding as tired as she felt. “One tall black coffee, please.” the woman smiled, obviously noting on Val’s tired behavior. As much as she loved working, it wasn’t as fun when you were working two shifts for someone else who decided they had better things to do. ‘Guess I’m just too nice.’ she thought, biting her lip before her attention was redirected at the woman. Realizing she had been zoning out, she offered the customer an apologetic smile before she nodded and typed in the order, “Your total is $2.70 please.” Valentine said softly, just barely being able to stifle her yawn that dared to escaped her lip gloss painted lips.
After receiving the exact amount of change, Valentine turned and walked over to the coffee machine, pouring in the correct blend before she waited patiently, tapping her fingers on the cool granite counters. She had just begun to let her thoughts drift again when she heard someone clearing their throat, sounding quite disgruntled. Her frown turned up at the corners of her mouth, putting on the fake smile once again. “Sorry about that. Welcome to Starbucks. What would you like to order?” she asked, her voice perky, matching her smile. And unless your name was Valentine Rose Harpers, you’d believe she actually wanted to be there.
Now with a tea to make, she quickly poured the freshly brewed coffee before she snapped the top on and mused, “Black coffee.” and placed it on the counter before she began the process of making the sweet tea the young high school student had ordered. While the tea was settling, she looked over, seeing no more new customers before she let herself drift off, only listening for the beep of the machine to let her escape her own thoughts. ‘Well, I’m a little tired, but nothing a drink couldn’t handle. Maybe I’ll go out to Razzle tonight…’ she thought, liking the idea and she was just about to pick out her outfit mentally when the annoying beep shattered her thoughts. Swiftly, she finished making the tea before then putting it on the counter, “Sweet tea.” she said, her eyes glancing over at the young student who had been lounging on the soft, comfortable chair, texting away on his phone.
A frown formed on her mouth when the young boy did not move, seeing as he was too involved with what he was doing. “Sweet tea.” she repeated louder, twitching in agitation when the boy did not move one inch. “Sir, your drink is ready.” Valentine said, a tinge of annoyance in her voice. But apparently, it worked, because he looked up, with a grin on his face, making Valentine roll her eyes mentally. He got up and stalked over, only looking at the drink her hands before looking up at her and saying, “Name’s Brent.” with a wink. “Well, Brent. Your drink is ready.” she muttered, pushing the drink towards him before she turned away, off to make herself a drink--and to stay away from those annoying high school boys that always seemed to try to pick her up; while she was at work. She smiled slightly when she heard the door open and then close, leaving her alone in the quiet coffee house.
Taking a small sip from her drink, she sighed and closed her tired eyes, letting herself lean against the counter, waiting for the next customer, or even better, someone else to relieve her from her long shifts. Her eyebrows crinkled together, just remembering she had a paper due tomorrow--one she hadn’t even started. With a bigger sigh, she began writing it in her head, not paying too much attention to the things around her, the only thing in her mind was the rise and fall of the roman empire.
